Review of the Water Act 2007

On 12 May 2014, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment, Senator Simon Birmingham, announced an independent review of theWater Act 2007 (Cth) (Water Act).

The overarching focus of the Review is to consider whether the Water Act is delivering on its objectives effectively and with the minimum necessary regulatory burden imposed on the water industry, water managers and irrigators.

The Review will also address the mandatory terms of reference set out in section 253 of the Water Act, which focus on the extent to which the objectives and outcomes of the Basin Plan and related reforms are being met.

An independent Expert Panel has been appointed to conduct the Review and report to the Parliamentary Secretary by November 2014.

The Expert Panel is interested to hear from everyone who wishes to have a say on the matters to be considered in the course of the Review. The deadline for submissions is COB Friday 4 July 2014.
