Public comment sought on tailings code of practice

Dec 17, 2012

The Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) is inviting feedback on a new draft code of practice to assist those involved in designing, constructing, operating and decommissioning tailings storage facilities (TSFs) in WA.

Subject to Ministerial approval, the code will complement the existing guideline that will be reviewed in 2013 – covering safe design and operating standards for tailings storage.

The draft code covers surface tailings storage such as in-pit facilities but does not apply to waste dumps, heap or vat leaching facilities, and underground mine fill.

It also covers the requirements throughout the life cycle of a TSF, including site selection, facility design, construction work, operations and emergency planning.

“The code promotes a proactive approach to monitoring during construction, operation, and prior to closure,” Mr Chaplyn said. “This way it is possible to predict a facility’s long-term performance and potential environmental impact after closure.”

The draft coddde is available at:

Feedback submissions close at 5pm on 17 January 2013.
